Recreational therapists help people with disabilities or illnesses maintain and improve the emotional, physical, and psychological well-being through arts, sports, and games.

Recreation therapists plan interventions that help overcome specific obstacles like paralysis or other disabilities and that engage patients’ interest in a treatment plan beyond the clinic walls.

Recreational therapists work in places such as substance abuse centers, rehabilitation centers, assisted living facilities, special education departments, and parks and recreation departments.

Recreational therapists must have a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation and are certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.

Music therapists use music to help the psychological, cognitive, and social needs of individuals by providing an avenue for communication for those who may have some communication barriers. Music therapists are part of a health care team that addresses a wide range of rehabilitation needs for patients.

Music therapists use singing, learning, playing, creating, and listening to music through evidence-based treatments that provide coping skills, emotional support, and physical rehabilitation. Music therapists must have a bachelor’s degree in music therapy that includes in-depth study of music. Most music therapists work in long-term care settings, but also work in hospitals or with children.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA’s) are responsible for providing anesthesia to patients during surgeries, child birth, and other procedures. Anesthetics are a type of medication allowing patients to numb pain or safely “sleep” during the surgery.

As Advance Practice Registered Nurses, CRNA’s practice with a relatively high degree of autonomy, and have high levels of responsibility for patient safety during surgery, working with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other health care professionals.

CRNA’s must have a Bachelor’s degree in nursing, one year of experience in working as a registered nurse in an acute care setting, and graduate with a master’s degree from a nurse anesthesia program.

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) are certified mental health professionals who having training to help children, teenagers, adults, and families who are in need.

One-in-five adults will have a mental health need sometime during their lives, and LPC’s can help patients like these through a variety of issues. As one of the six professionals who can provide psychotherapy, LPC’s specialize in treating mental illness, substance abuse, and family and relationship conflict.

Many LPC’s work as school counselors, specializing on the needs of children and teenagers, serving as an advocate for students, helping students achieve their college or career goals.

By 2016, all health care providers must have implemented electrnoic health records, expanding the roles of health information managers.

As patient data become more frequently used for quality management and in medical research, health information managers must ensure that databases are complete, accurate, and available only to authorized personnel

Histotechnologists use the science of histology: the study of the cellular structure of cells, tissues, and organs through microscopic examination.

These members of the laboratory team will collect samples taken from surgeries, biopsies, or autopsies to collect tissue samples in order to create microscopic slides.

Using chemicals and scientific techniques, histotechnologists prepare slides to identify types of cancer, infections, or other diseases.
